Need help learning how to Root.

Hi guys, I have been here for a week or so, I was really hopping to take advantage of this forum, hence my VIP status, but I cannot believe how I do not understand Rooting.

I have a Telus Candian Note2 & Note3 I have been unable to Root either one. I have tried Towelroot but no luck.

Can anybody guide me on how I can Root my device?

Perhaps somebody can create a How To as I surely have not seen one.

Also, how do I actually instal, no root apps, such as;...
