Typical String/Name Search in IDA for Damage of a character?

Hi im trying to "hack" darkness reborn i must admit im still a big noob but i managed to decompile and disassembly with IDA Pro and have all files in front of me. How can I use a Debugger like adb to listen/snif game events when pressing smth. Or what is the typical string/name to search within IDA for the Damage of my character. I used the String Search function but also dont really know what to search for. Any help would be appreciated.
